I have figured out launch control on the MK6 GTI. The owners manual says to turn off ASR, floor it and let go of the brake. That results in acceleration but a lot of wheel spin. I have been experimenting and I have figured it out. Turn off ASR, hold the brake, bring revs to 2-2,500rpm. Let go of the brake, and as the car begins to move gradually floor the throttle. This will result in a rather perfect launch with little to no wheel spin. There is no jolt or thunks from the transmission or anything.

I thought GTIs had genuine launch control? As in brake + gas, car automatically holds revs, let go of brake and enjoy?

Supposedly the perfect launch is about 5-10% wheel spin on a launch. But I don't know I just feed gas and hope I don't mess up the clutch release. . . But the crappier the tires you have the more wheelspin you will get on launch. If you don't get wheel spin you are not launching effectively.

They do, and its in the owners manual. But it causes too much wheel spin.

There is a bit of wheel spin, but honestly you wont notice it.

Thats particularly odd.

What revs does the car hold at when you do it using the suggested way?

3,000rpm, and when you let go of the brake there is a brief moment when the DSG engages (no jolts or clunks) and then the revs rise to 6,800rpm due to the wheel spin.

That actually sounds useless by all accounts.

This is how my Focus did things. Put it into Sport, TC off, select first gear, brake+gas and foot off brake and have some fun.

I would've figured any DCT equipped car would handle it in a similar manner.

When you have the ASR off and the DSG in S or manual mode the DSG knows you want to use launch control. When you bring the revs up to 3,000 by flooring the throttle, the revs fluctuate up and down until you let go of the brake. The happens regardless of revs however, so it seems the DSG doesn't care what revs you launch at, but it limits you to 3,000 like it says in the owners manual. I've done launch control like 15 times in the last 2 days perfecting it and I've gotten no warning message or had a burning tire smell, so I guess it isn't harsh on the DSG.

The DSG launch control lets you have a lot of fun. If you use the owners manual method it GOES if it is warm outside and it is very grin inducing and there is a lot of tire squeal. When it's around 40-50 degrees bringing the revs down helps lot.

This is how it looks when you do the way I did: I timed it at 5.9 seconds. Not my car, somebody elses video using the method I used.

and this is the owners manual's way

Nah, 2nd gear maxes at 62 mph or so. But its at the 6800 rpm limiter.
